SONG OF NOW

I'll tell you about punk rock: punk rock is a word used by dillitante's and ah... and ah... heartless manipulators about music that takes up the energies and the bodies and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds of young men who give what they have to it and give everything they have to it and it's a... it's a term that's based on contempt, it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism and everything that's rotten about rock'n'roll. I don't know Johnny Rotten but I'm sure... I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did. You see, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius, myself . And that music is so powerful that it's quite beyond my control and ah... when I'm in the grips of it I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about? Have you ever felt like that? When you just couldn't feel anything and you didn't want to either. You know? Like that? Do you understand what I'm saying sir?

~ Mogwai, Punkrock

SUMMER

*insert maniaical laughter*

Okay, so stuff I'm looking to do or might do this summer:

- NOT just play video games and sleep all day as per previous summers (a lazy bum is me)
- go work at Barnes & Nobles and/or Starbucks and/or Blockblusters and/or any other cool place
- find a bass teacher in the area
- find an art group in the area
- find a programming class in the area
- go down to the Florida to see grammyparents
- go up to Canada (14 hour drive?!) to see meh aunt
- war movie
- road trip to anywhere
- get my damn liscence

And all that good stuff.

Anyone who has info on any bass teachers or art groups or programming classes, it'd be nice to know...

And I'm gone. Off to ink crap.

AN ANIME REVOLUTION

So, yeah, after Naruto kinda died away from my life, I didn't really watch too much anime for like... a coupla months. All sense of anime just left me. I because a shell of my former anime geek self, with only FMA sating my satisfaction for Japaneseness.

And then I experienced Samurai Champloo.

Dooood... the later episodes of that show are some screwed up shit, no jonesin'. (specially numbah 8, with the beatboxing samurai dude, and numbah 9 with the whole... laughing gas opium pipe-dream crucifixion thing.)

And it's got that groovy hip-hop soundtrack.

AND IT'S ABOUT FSKING SAMURAIS. WITH SWORDS.

I think it's my new religion. Expect fanart... like, a lot.

Oh yeah, schools almost up, whee... yah. Um. Out.

SONG OF NOW

Once upon a time at the foot of a shit mountain, there was a town where the people known as Happyfolk lived, their very existence a mystery to the rest of the world, obscured as it was by shit clouds. Here they played out their peaceful lives, innocent of the litany of excess and violence that was growing in the world below. To live in harmony with the spirit of the mountain called Monkey was enough. Then one day Strangefolk arrived in the town. They came in camouflage, hidden behind dark glasses, but no one noticed them: they only saw shadows. You see, without the Truth of the Eyes, the Happyfolk were blind.

Falling out of aeroplanes and hiding out in holes
Waiting for the sunset to come, people going home
Jump back from behind them and shoot them in the head
Now everybody dancing the dance of the dead,
the dance of the dead,
the dance of the dead

In time, Strangefolk found their way into the high reaches of the mountain, and it was there that they found the caves of unimaginable Sincerity and Beauty. By chance, they stumbled upon the Place Where All Good Souls Come to Rest. The Strangefolk, they coveted the jewels in these caves above all things, and soon they began to mine the mountain, its rich seam fueling the chaos of their own world. Meanwhile, down in the town, the Happyfolk slept restlessly, their dreams invaded by shadowy figures digging away at their souls. Every day, people would wake and stare at the mountain. Why was it bringing darkness into their lives? And as the Strangefolk mined deeper and deeper into the mountain, holes began to appear, bringing with them a cold and bitter wind that chilled the very soul of them up. For the first time, the Happyfolk felt fearful for they knew that soon the Monkey would soon stir from its deep sleep. And then came a sound. Distant first, it grew into castrophany so immense it could be heard far away in space. There were no screams. There was no time. The mountain called Monkey had spoken. There was only fire. And then, nothing.

O little town in U.S.A, your time has come to see
ThereĀ“s nothing you believe you want
But where were you when it all came down on me?
Did you call me now?

SONG OF NOW

I walk halfway around the world
just to sit down by your side
and i would do most anything girl
to be the apple of your eye
troubles they may come and go but goodtimes never go
if the road gets rocky girl just steady as we go

anyplace you wanna go you go you know
i'll be next to you treasure you're looking for
i've searched the whole world
through the trouble they may come and go but goodtimes never go
so if the road gets rocky girl just steady as we go

when the storm comes shelter me
I don't say a word anymore and you know exactly what I mean
in the darkest times you shine on me
set me free forgive me,
steady as we go
so if you heart runs dry my love
I will fill your cup
and if your load gets heavy girl
I will lift you up
but troubles they may come and go
but goodtimes be the gold
so if the road gets rocky girl
just steady as we go

shine shine, shine on me hey

MY SUBCONSCIOUS IS ON TO ME

- Okay. So. Yeah.

Wierd Dream Numbah 1: A mysterious and completely uncalled for explosion rocks the... front stairs of my house. Yeah. And despite the fact that the outside of my house is brick and crap, the whole thing burns down. Mainly because when we call the fire truck, it stops about 5 houses away and the firemen sit there and watch it burn. So me and me family go and live in... Broughton's basement.

So yeah, I woke up at like 4:30, and went back to sleep, and along came...

Wierd Dream Numbah 2 (even wierder!): At least I know this one's influenced by something... Marc's war movie thing. So, yeah, somebody wanted to tape some random movie (forgot who it was... memory... fading) and it's this crazy gangsta-mobster movie thing. So Dom and Stefan and Marc are these hitmen sent out to cap this crime lord/pimp and his ho (played by, of all people, Zebbie and Molly o_O.) So Zebbie's sitting there in his chair, Godfather style, and Dom, out of nowhere, LEVITATES, floats over, and punches Zebbie in the stomach, while Stefan and Marc just kind of stand there. Meanwhile, I'm the cameraman, and since I forgot the video camera, I'm taping the whole thing through my glasses. Yes, my glasses. I was holding them like a video camera.

Telltale signs that I am indeed insane.

- Guild Wars is fun as hell. Go and get it so I have people to play with. NO SUBSCRIPTION FEE.

- Dave Matthews Band's new album is just their best yet, go and get that too.

Out.

EDIT: As I read that post, I realized that I said "so, yeah" a lot... GAH! WHO CARES? CRAZYHEAD! *mutilates self*

RECOMMENDED LISTENING: PART 3

More recommended listening. Because Jeph from Questionable Content updated his too (and he knows what the hell he's talking about, all his musical choices are awesome. But I digress.)

---

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

~ The Fiery Furnaces, Blueberry Boat
Out of all of the albums, of course, the first one has to be the wierdest. And wierd this album is... the lyrics in it are absolutely rediculously and baffingly witty, and the crazy rhythms and melodies and random interludes or even blank spots in the songs will have you scratching your head the first time you listen to this. But the more you listen, the more you'll get to understand the pure wit of the songs, and you'll even get used to the randomness of the music, and it'll have you bobbing your head for months to come.

~ The Hives, Tyrannosaurus Hives
I have but one major beef with this album: it is SHORT. A full 34 minutes will take you from beginning to end of this entire album, extra songs added and all. But for that 34 minutes, your eardrums will be blasted with pure and utter indie rock ecstacy. They're one of the more heavy indie bands out there, with barely time for any breaks in any of their songs. They're fast paced, energetic, and just damn good. And I cant get the lyrics to B Is For Brutus out of my head.

~ Jimmy Eat World, Futures
Emo? Since when does Richie listen to emo rock? Okay, stop shaking your heads in disbelief and listen. I don't usually like emo stuff. But eh, Jimmy Eat World be goodness. They have a good diverse mix on their CD, from angsty hatesy bits like Futures and Pain, to the more mellow and chill vibes of Night Drive and The World You Love. And the twangy guitar riffs in their songs like Polaris are pretty addictive. If emo be your thing, check out Jimmy Eat World. And if it's not, check it out anyway, because I said so.

~ The Killers, Hot Fuss
Ah yes, The Killers. Everyone love The damn Killers. And for good reason. They're fucking awesome. Their lyrics are the kind that romp around in your head when you're sitting in class, trying to remember that formula for foci or whatevernot. And they have bass parts that are fun as hell to play. And they can be emotional in their songs, but not to the point that they're emo, just to the point that you're like "... wow." Personal picks would be Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Mr. Brightside (duh), Smile Like You Mean It, and Midnight Show. And it's fun to walk up to Andy in the hallway and say "You're a star!" Muaha.

~ Modest Mouse, The Lonesome Crowded West
How many Modest Mouse albums am I going to go through? I'm not entirely sure. This would be one of the band's first albums, and... it's cool as hell. They were way more wild back in 1997 than say now, with The Moon and Antarctica or Good News being way more mellow. This one's just them yelling almost incomprehensible lyrics to simply bitchin' guitar riffs and kickin' drums (like in Truckers Atlas... drool.) It may turn off some people, but I loves it meself.

~ The Postal Service, Give Up
I wasn't sure whether I should put this under Electronic or Alternative, and I decided under here. Because a hell of a lot of their songs are mainly synthesizers and crap. Which is totally okay for me, because techno beats are the hotness, and this proves true in Give Up. Not to mention the lrycis are cool, and you can listen to it no matter what mood you be in. Happy? Sad? Angsty? Suicidal? Listen! Oh, and it's also cool because like every person I watch on deviantART listens to them. And that's cool too. I think. Blah!

---

ELECTRONIC

~ Fatboy Slim, Palookaville
Despite the really creepy cover art (naked peeps, anyone?) you definetly shouldnt pass up on this one. It's not really techno, but it's not really any kind of other genre either... it's just Fatboy Slim. Expect pimpin' techno beats, lot's of repeating lyrics (like in Don't Let The Man... the entire song is one sentence) and just addictive stuff. Like everything else on this list.

---

ROCK

~ The Beatles, 1
Yay! Beatles! Oldie British rock! The ultimate band. The ultimate album. The ultimate everything. You can't beat this. You could play this album in your car, and everyone would be singing along. Anyone who doesn't should be beat with a moldy herring.

~ Green Day, American Idiot
Green Day! Never really listened to them before this album came out, and I'm kinda starting to regret that now. Some may say "Bah, it's just old generic rock" and I'm inclined to agree somewhat with anyone who has those ideals. But it's the BEST generic rock. Just like how Yellowcard perfected all that pop/punk rock, Green Day does generic rock, and does it well. Not to mention their two really long songs on the album (Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming) are like ultimate headbang road trip songs, as anyone on my bus on the way back from Winchester should have noticed...

~ Lenny Kravitz, Baptism
First rock album I'd ever listened to and seriously liked was one of Kravitz's earlier albums. And now, I be listening to Baptism, and I'm reliving that experience. All of the songs are distinctly different, each with their own unique rhythm and beats and shit like that. Lady and Sistamamalover stand out from all of the rest for me, but eh, you might like something different. And the Best of Kravitz CD is beast too, with American Woman and Fly Away on it... two of the best damn songs ever, period, shut the hell up.

~ Linkin Park, Hybrid Theory
So, um, yeah. Linkin Park. Hybrid Theory. Their best album. Nuff said? Nah, I'll say some more. Hadn't really listened to Hybrid Theory before I god hold of Collision Course, I was really more of a Meteora man. But after Collision Theory, and after realizing that a lot of the songs on that were remixes off of Hybrid Theory, I kinda converted. And... I'm a happier man because of it. But bah, Linkin Park is still screaming metally rock goodness no matter what album.

---

HIP-HOP/RAP

~ Eminem, Encore
Hm. I see this as Em's most emotional and awesome album yet. It's got some real emotion to it. Sure, it still may have the wierd crazy fun stuff on it (Just Lose It comes to mind) but if you dig deeper, you find some truly powerful stuff like Toy Soldiers and Mockingbird. And that's the true brilliance of Eminem. Oh yeah, and the extra crap on the newer album has just awesome extras like Paul and Puke (if you want to gross your friends out...)

~ John Legend, Get Lifted
So yeah, Legend goes sort of the same path as Green Day: though it may sound like blah, generic Brian McKnightish R&B, it is THE BEST R&B album to come out in a hell of a long time. Mainly because it has Ordinary People on it (which is the best R&B song ever.) But it has other good junk on it like Let's Get Lifted and Refuge that makes it stand out from everything else out there.

~ Kanye West, The College Dropout
He's not another generic rapper dude. That's why Kanye West is up there. No, after listening to Jesus Walks, I have determined that West goes up there with the standout non-retarded rappers out there (along with Jay-Z and Luda) But eh, yeah, Jesus Walks. Slow Jamz. Through The Wire. Spaceship. Not enough adjectives to describe the sweetness.

---

JAZZ

~ Miles Davis, Kind Of Blue
The best of the best. This is the absofuckinlutely greatest thing to listen to when you just want to just completely and utterly mellow out. The slowest of the slow jams. If you're a jazz fanatic, this is a must have, out of all of Davis' stuff. I'll stop now, because I'll ruin it if I try and describe it anymore positively. Or because I'm getting pretty damn tired... LISTEN TO IT.

~ Ray Charles, Genius Loves Company
Anybody saying anything about this album becoming popular only because Charles died, and I'll rip their front teeth out. Best compilation of spoken jazz ever. I don't even like Norah Jones, but her duet thingy on here with Charles was just... aggh. Goes up there with Kind of Blue as the best thing to chill out to. Ignore the slightly disturbing cover and buy it. Or download it. Or do whatever.

---

OTHER

~Gorillaz, Demon Days
And I've saved the best for last. Please just ignore the fact that I'm totally obsessed with the art style of the Gorillaz band, and that I've listened to practically every song that they've made ever about 50 times, and ignore the fact that I'm slightly insane and just LISTEN. THIS. ALBUM. KICKS YOUR ASS. It takes like every single genre (rap, rock, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, the works) and compiles it into a mishmash of beauty. And it has the damn music videos on it. Like the music video for Feel Good Inc. (which is the greatest music video ever created by anyone, ever, don't even get me started on it.) The whole band just oozes style, do yourself a favor and buy this. NOW. BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

---

*sleep*

No wait. One other thing to say. If you haven't been reading it (or haven't started reading it at all, vile creature) the current storyarc in Megatokyo is kicking ass. Serious ass. Ansty, confusing, Tenchi Muyo, girls-fighting-over-one-guy ass. Go read.

*now sleep. seriously.*

SONG OF NOW

I know what you want
I wanna take you a midnight show tonight
If you can keep a secret
I got a blanket in the back seat of my mind
And a little place that sits beneath the sky
She turned her face to speak
But no-one heard her cry
I drive faster, boy
I drive faster, boy

I know there's a hope
There's too many people trying to help me cope
You got a real short skirt
I wanna look up, look up, look up, yeah yeah

We were just in time
Let me take a little more off your mind
There's something in my head
Somewhere in the back said
We were just a good thing
We were such a good thing

Make it go away without a word
But promise me you'll stay
...
Oh make it go away!

I drive faster, boy
I drive faster, boy

Oh crashing time can't hide a guilty girl
With jealous hearts that start with blossom curls
I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier
Of stars in atmosphere
And watch her disappear
Into the midnight show...

Oh faster, faster, faster...
Oh no no no no no...
If you keep a secret
Well baby... you can keep a secret
If you keep a secret...

~ The Killers, Midnight Show

LE SIGH

Um.

You'd probably expect some massive long post thing describing the awesomeness of Winchester trip, but I'm nowhere near the mood to write such a thing. Use your imagination.

What I will say is that the school year is almost up... another year almost gone. And then one more year and poof, off to college. Yey. [sarcasm]The excitement is killing me.[/sarcasm]

In other less emo news, Reyyy has been added to the links. Woot. Cool art, comics, the works... yeah.

Gah, lack of energy and caring is evident. Bye now.

I'm that nice black dude who is friends with everyone, who dresses in Roca Wear and Nike, yet lives in the richest-assed neighborhood ever, that listens to things varying from Coltrane to Modest Mouse to DJ Taka, and who is both emo and cheerful at the same time. In short, I'm just plain crazy.
